Kathmandu: Nepal has confirmed the reappearance of monkeypox (Mpox) with a new case reported in the country. A 36-year-old man from Tanahun district tested positive for the viral infection after returning from Saudi Arabia.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, the man underwent a lab test at the National Public Health Laboratory in Teku, which confirmed the infection. Ministry spokesperson Dr. Prakash Budhathoki stated that the patient is currently in isolation at the Shukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital. His condition is reported to be stable and not life-threatening.

Nepal recorded its first Mpox case in June 2023, involving a foreign national visiting the country. This latest case highlights concerns about the potential spread of the disease, particularly among travelers returning from regions where Mpox is more prevalent.

In response, the government has instructed health authorities to establish health desks at Tribhuvan International Airport and other transit points. These desks will monitor travelers for symptoms and potential exposure to the virus. Public health officials have also been directed to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to prevent further infections.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease transmitted through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated materials. Common symptoms include fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue.

The reappearance of Mpox in Nepal underscores the importance of public awareness and preventive measures to contain the virus, especially for those traveling from high-risk regions.
